For Colitis

Colitis is a general term for a large number of causes that result in inflammation in the lining of the bowel. Common symptoms associated with colitis are abdominal cramping, frequent loose stools or persistent diarrhea, loss of control of bowel function, fever, sleepiness, and weight loss.
Ulcerative colitis is the most serious form of colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease. There are two main types of inflammatory bowel disease: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD).

Ulcerative colitis usually affects young adults (patients in their 20’s and 30’s) but can affect children and older adults as well. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition accompanied by bloody diarrhea.
Ulcerative colitis is a risk factor for developing colon cancer and requires long-term medical care. The inflammation usually begins in the rectum and lower colon, but may also affect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis may be inactive and then get worse over a period of years. Treatment for ulcerative colitis is generally limited to symptomatic periods and typically includes an anti-inflammatory medication, such as sulfasalazine or corticosteroids. These drugs cause negative side effects. Worse, an estimated 20 to 25 percent of colitis patients do not respond to medication and need colostomy surgery to remove the affected portion of the colon.
